Angel Island

 

 

It was a little bit of Heave= n

St. Paddy’s day on Angel Isle

We’d gone to share some Irish drinks

some songs and laughs

some nods and winks

 

First there was Cody and Froggie

the shantyman’s wife

Therel O’Ryan the Herald

at his waist a long knife

Then there’s Bob a tall Swede

with a jug full of mead

next some more likely crew

who brought all kinds of brew

and they’d all brought their women

and were plannin’ on sin= nin’

 

We piled onto the ferry

crossed the bay way ten miles

and we’re all makin’ merry

full of giggles and smiles

When we came to the island

there were buildings of shame

where in prisons remorseless

Chinese gave up their names

 

The day had turned chilly

with a bit of a wind

so we stood in a circle

and our elbows did bend

 

Round came Mead

Round came Guiness

Round came Bass

Round came Bushmill

Round came…  Hey!  That isn’t a joint ???

Round came Dolly Tosspot’s Blend of All Brews

 

Then just as our instruments

were unlimbered for song

who but the park Ranger

should come strolling along

 

“You can’t drink here”  he ordered

“put the whiskey away”

“Oh, but Sir”  <= /span>we protested

“it’s St. Paddy’s Day”

You could see that he’s sorry

but he had his job to do

and Therl collected the bottles

while he thought of something new

 

“Hey, Cody!&= nbsp; Weren’t you going to sing?

Let’s have a round of Paddy West

and Cody pulled out all the stops

he sang his very best

The Ranger stood and listened

with a twinkle in his eye

and when the song was over

he heaved a happy sigh

“I’ll be back”  <= /span>he said and turned

“… to go and get my fiddle”=

and good as his word when he returned

we stood him in the middle

We sang old songs and told old tales

we passed the bottle low

and he pretended not to see

and we pretended not to know

 

We’d saved for the last of the party

a jug of old Tullymore Dew

for the praise and the blessing of friendship

and the grace that each day is born new
